A council inquiry into changes to hearing aid services in Derbyshire is to be held on Monday (Jan 11th)
This public meeting of a sub-group from Derbyshire County Council's Adult Health and Care Improvement and Scrutiny Committee follows complaints from Mark about the audiology provision for his constituency.
From October, hearing services across Derbyshire were altered in order to cut waiting times for audiology appointments.
The number of clinics treating people in the county with hearing problems increased from 17 to 23. These clinics provide assessments, hearing aid fittings and advice.
But London Road Community Hospital in Derby stopped accepting people from across the county and limited its service to patients registered with a city GP. Clinics at hospitals in Sheffield, Nottingham and Burton were also closed to Derbyshire patients.
Mark wrote to Derbyshire Primary Care Trust to complain that South Derbyshire had lost out. No new audiology clinics were set up in the district, which meant that South Derbyshire had just one centre - in Swadlincote. What is more, many of his constituents, living in areas like Hilton, used the Derby hospital because it was far more convenient than travelling to the Swadlincote clinic. No alternative Derby service was provided. In contrast, the Erewash district of Derbyshire had three audiology centres provided and a Nottingham service for those who found that more convenient. The meeting will be held at the Conference Suite, Sharpe's Pottery, 23 West Street in Swadlincote between 10am and 1230pm.
It is also understood that the Primary Care Trust is reviewing the service following Mark's complaints.
Mark said: "While I have heard that this service will now be reviewed by the trust, the County Council's additional interest is welcome. Frankly the Primary Care Trust have not thought through this provision. Many South Derbyshire residents find getting to Swadlincote inconvenient. There should be a Derby service they can use and a Burton service would be welcome too. I have already received complaints from several users of this important service. The trust seems to be seeing sense at last. I hope they confirm that when they see the County Council."
