Swadlincote could get a new specially-adapted toilet at Green Bank Leisure Centre if plans to modernise the centre go ahead Mark is running a campaign to get "Changing Places" toilets in South Derbyshire. At the moment, there are none in the district. The nearest is a recently-opened facility at Derby's Westfield Centre. Mencap, which is running the national campaign, says there are only 85 fully-accessible toilets at the moment across the UK. The charity says that people with severe disabilities find using public conveniences - including those designated as disabled toilets - an ordeal. Fully-accessible toilets have changing facilities like a bench and a hoist so people can be more independent. They cost between £8,000 and £10,000 to install. The MP wrote to the district council after a constituent suggested that the Green Bank Leisure Centre would be a good location. The council has replied that they are awaiting a decision on an application to refurbish the centre under the Government's Free Swimming Capital Modernisation scheme. If successful, the council will consider building a fully accessible toilet. The swimming scheme is open to all authorities that are offering free swimming for those aged 16 and under plus 60 and over. Mark said: "It is encouraging that the council is interested in this idea. A modern leisure centre certainly should have fully-accessible toilets"
