I became Member of Parliament for South Derbyshire on May 1, 1997 and stood down when Parliament was dissolved on April 12, 2010. In that time I was contacted by more than 15,000 households (around one in four of those in the area). This website provides information on my work, both in and on behalf of the constituency.

Feb 26, 2010 - Chellaston School debate

Mark will be one of the panelists at a "Question Time" debate at Chellaston school today.

More than 50 pupils and teachers are expected to attend the event, which has been organised by the sixth-formers.

Mark will join a panel of local politicians plus headteacher Ray Ruszczynski to answer questions posed by the audience in the hour-long session at the Performing Arts Studio at the school from 4pm.

The debate has been organised by sixth-formers Lee Allen and Matthew Whiteside, who also run the school's radio station. Lee (17), the station's main presenter, will chair the event.

The show will be divided into four quarters, with a main question being debated within each 15 minute slot. Each of these main questions has been chosen by teachers or pupils from the school. Two will tackle local issues, while the remaining will centre on national concerns.

The other politicians expected to attend are Derek Clark, UKIP MEP plus Matthew Holmes, Conservative councillor for the Chellaston ward of Derby City Council.

Mark said: "I always welcome the opportunity to listen to the views of young people and answer their questions on politics. It's a challenge, but it's also fun. This is an opportunity to encourage young people, who vote disproportionately little, to take an active interest in political issues if not in party politics."
