November 15 - Mark opposes train service cut at Willington

Mark has written to Stagecoach to complain about proposals to cut the London service from Willington Station.

At a meeting with the train operator last month, Mark was told that the daily service to London  from Willington will be discontinued from Autumn next year.

This is part of a major timetable change by East Midlands Trains, the Stagecoach subsidiary, which has just taken over the East Midlands-London rail franchise from Midland Mainline.

There are currently two early morning direct services from Burton to London St Pancras on weekdays and one on a Saturday. There are two services from London in the late afternoon on weekdays and one on Saturday. These trains all stop at Willington.

Under the proposals, the London service would start in Derby .

Mark has already gauged views from his constituents via his e-newsletter and has received several responses, all wanting to save the service.

He said: "I echo their concerns and feel the proposal is a retrogade step especially at a time when encouragement is needed to get people to use public transport. Since the service was introduced in May 1999, it has been poorly marketed. A concerted campaign promoting the service together with improvements to the nearby car park would encourage people to use the direct service."

Promoted by Ray Collins, General Secretary, the Labour Party, on behalf of the Labour Party, both at 39 Victoria Street, London, SW1H 0HA.
